Nicole is an Australian, but she has become as one of Hollywood actress. Her father is a biochemist cum clinical psychologist and her mother is a nursing instructor. As her father wanted to do some research on breast cancer, the whole family had to move to Washington. In her school going age, she was very much interested in acting and other performance as well. She was used to perform regularly at the Philip Street theatre. One day, she received an individual letter from an audience who praised on her acting and it very much touched her and encouraged her to concentrate more on acting.

This made her to drop from studies and she stepped on full time acting sine then. She first appeared in the film of Bush Christmas  at her age of 16 and in the same year of 1983, she was given chance to perform in television such as a lead in BMX Bandits and in “Vietnam” which was screened in 1987. The role she had, helped her to receive her first Australian Film Institute Award.  In 1989, she was able to act in her first performance in US film of Dead Calm.
The film she performed in 1995, ‘To Die For’ was successful as it enhanced her popularity in the cinema industry as she was given several awards and also became nominee for several other awards for the excellent performance she contributed through this film. The awards given were Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actress, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress, Empire Award for Best Actress, Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, London Film Critics Circle Award for Actress of the Year, Seattle International Film Festival Award for Best Actress and Southeastern Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress
Following the film of ‘To die for’, the film of Moulin Rouge! She further developed her career as much of praise and encouragements from her fans and cinema lovers. She also received much responses and offers from several producers and artists who wanted that Nicole should perform in their work as well. This Moulin Rouge brought several awards, they were the Empire Award for Best Actress,  Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy,  Hollywood Film Festival Award for Actress of the Year,  Internet Entertainment Writers Association Award for Best Actress, Satellite Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy,  London Film Critics Circle Award for Actress of the Year,  MTV Movie Award for Best Female Performance and  MTV Movie Award for Best Musical Sequence. She was able to be nominated to reactive more awards as well.
